Was Jesus Married?

Lamont Taylor asks: Hey. So I was wondering, was Jesus married? I had read something like that in "The gospel of Jesus' wife".

Hi Lamont.

The notion that Jesus was married, is found in two places. The fictional work of Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code), and as you've stated, "The Gospel of Jesus' wife".

Being that Dan's work is fictional, we know not to consider this as evidence. In the case of "The Gospel of Jesus' Wife", this writing is classified as a pseudo writing (fake). According to archeology, the fragment has been proven to be a forgery. First, the hand resembled neither an ancient literary hand nor a documentary hand. Secondly, the script's Latinized forms suggested a modern simulation of ancient writing. Lastly, the ink ink itself contained evidence of forgery.

Instead of having "countless references to Jesus and Magdalane's union (Da Vinci Code, pages 247 and 245), what we actually have, is absolutely zero evidence of a claim of Jesus being married.

Last but not least, Paul does give light to the notion that Jesus was not married. In 1 Corinthians 9:5 Paul defends his right to have a wife, as he points out that some of the other apostles had wives. (1 Corinthians 9:5- Don't we have a right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the Lord's brothers and Cephas?"). The point being, Paul would not have used the apostles as a prime example if Jesus himself were married. Instead, Paul would have used Jesus and his marriage to defend the point, as Paul lived by the notion of 1 Corinthians 11:1 "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."

Hope this helps. Be blessed.
